“She wanted life to be better than regular life for everyone, and I do not mean that in a trite way,” said Ray Colgan, who sings with the Crack Pipes, worked at Emo’s and manages Antone’s.

Esme Barrera, 29, was killed in the early-morning hours of Jan. 1 in her home, some time after celebrating New Year’s with friends at the 29th Street Ballroom, a venue mere blocks from her house. No arrests have been made.

As the people who knew her remember her life, police work to reassure residents in the neighborhood where she lived that they continue to investigate her murder.

The death of Esme Barrera, who was murdered early Sunday, has sparked grief and outrage from both friends and strangers in the community.
Police continue to investigate two other assaults that occurred in the area, but no arrests have been made.
“This is a community emergency,” said Mary Ceallaigh, who lives in Hyde Park and is a nanny to children whom Barrera taught at Casis Elementary School.. “We’ve got a very sick individual on the loose. We need to be mobilized.”
